With the news that we've signed 15 year old Jack Punter on Youth forms and along with his brother Jimmy they are the fourth generation of their family to play for the club got me thinking about the greatest players to pull on a Worthing shirt.
Obviously its an age thing, but knocking 50 next year, invites in post, I'm going to throw in a few names from my own personal memories; Geoff Raynsford, Paul Lelliott, Micky Edmonds, Mike Cornwell, Richard Tiltman and in the words of the legendary Barry Lloyd, Chris Punter, father of Jimmy and Jack, who in BL's opinion is the best player to play for Worthing in the modern era, ie the last 40 years.
Any other players to throw into the mix?

Geoff Raynsford or Bruce Aitkin were my favourites as a kid in the 80s.
Kneesy and Carrington from the 90s teams
Chris Punter was the biggest waste of talent I have ever seen but was a great player and could have been so much more!!

Chris Punter was the biggest waste of talent I have ever seen but was a great player and could have been so much more!! Come along to a youth game and you can tell him My all time favourite was Mike Cornwell who for me had just about everything. He perhaps could/should have scored more goals but in tandem with Mick Edmonds made a sensational strike partnership. One with a plate in his head and the other spending time during the game looking in the mud for his contact lenses. From the same era, I was always a huge fan of Martin Cox who only gave up playing 4 or 5 years back having been converted into the shortest centre half in the County League. So many more - Darren Robson, Darren Freeman (first time around), a young Kenno, Gavin Geddes, Spencer Mintram, Richard Knight, etc..........

I can only go on who I saw in the flesh but for me Ben Carrington is by far and away the best player I've seen purely because nobody played the game the way he did.
Honourable mentions to Darren Robson, Darren Freeman, Jimmy Quinn, Richard Tiltman and Mark Knee too

I have told Punts many a time, I dont think he ever listened though! Forgot about Geddes, he was good to watch. Been so many down the years lets hope we can get back to the level where we attract (or develop) this kind of calibre of player

My first post but a good topic from Harty.
Gil Harding would have been my choice back in the late 60's early 70's, but then we had the likes of Peter Grummitt, Biz Russell, Mike Cornwell, Peter O'Sullivan, Martin Cox, Richard Tiltman, Geoff Raynsford, Gerry Armstrong, Ben Carrington etc. etc. but the stand out for me has to be Micky Edmonds. He once scored 54 goals in a season in the Isthmian Premier, which in those days was one step down from the Conference. Top top player and a lovely bloke who should have played at a lot higher level.

Not forgetting Wilf Hugill, Paddy Long, Colin Woffinden, Norman Cairns, John Lock and Colin Newstead. The list goes on!

I think the most talented footballer ever to play for Worthing has to be Peter Grummitt. He was about twice as good as any other keeper who's played for Worthing.
Here's what Wikipedia says about him:
Peter Grummitt (born 19 August 1942) is an English footballer who played as a goalkeeper in the Football League during the 1960s and 1970s, most notably with Nottingham Forest.
He made 352 senior appearances for Forest before transferring to Sheffield Wednesday in 1970.
During his time with Wednesday he made 130 senior appearances, and missed just one game during the 1970-71 season. In April 1973 he played his last game for Wednesday, and he then moved to Brighton and Hove Albion and made over 100 league appearances for them before joining Worthing F.C.
He was capped on three occasions by England under-23 between 1961 and 1963.

There have been many great players over the years and still are some that grace the hallowed turf of Woodside Road.
For me, i loved watching Ben Carrington, Mark Burt, Kenno, Mark Knee (still watching), Steve Riley, Mark Falco, the great Geoff Raynsford, Mickey Edmonds, Richard Tiltman, Tony Holden, Simon Funnell, Tim Read, Danny Smith, Darren Robson, Gavin Geddes, Jamie Crellin (still watching) and many more, i love you all.
As for Jack Punter carrying on the family name, Chris is and rightly so, proud of his boy and he should be too.
Up the Rebels

Great post Harty, in the 20+ years I've been going, I've been honoured to see some great players star for us. Sadly I missed out on Barry's team of the 80's with Micky Edmonds, Cornwell, Raynsford etc.
Early on I remember Gerry Armstrong starring and rattling them away, the best player we've had that I've seen, by a million miles, for me is Ben Carrington though. He played football like no one I've seen before for us. He was not only a great player but is a great Rebel. Still takes an interest in the club and still hates Lewes! For the longevity of his career for us, consistency, character and the sheer amount of people who came to Woodside just to see Ben play, it has to be him. We'll never see a player like him again.
Other very notable mentions go to Mark Knee and Paul Kennett who are true club legends, Karly Akehurst who I think had the ability to go professional before he broke his leg and Jamie Brotherton for his consistency, clear loyalty for the club over the years and match winning performances.
We've had technically better players than some of the above (ie Mustafa, Charles, Pacquette) but they weren't proper Rebels like the above are.

Why hasn't anyone mentioned the legend that is Chuck Martini? In my time of watching Worthing since the early 90's, it has to be Ben Carrington. Legend is an overused term in football, but Ben C is deserving. He had everything. Skill, charisma, an entertainer and possibly he best asset, the ability to get right under the skin and get opponents rattled. Watching Ben in combination with Darren Freeman, winding up the likes of Lewes and Bognor and knocking the crap out them was a joyous sight!
