After our very successful run of league games of recent weeks we return to FA Trophy action as we welcome National League Premier Division Sutton United to Woodside Road on Saturday (14th) at 3pm in the 'Round of the last 32 teams' (second round proper).
Sutton United were founded in 1898, members of the Athenian League from 1921 (winning in 1928, 1946 & 1958) they have played no lower than the top division of the Isthmian League since joining in 1963 (winning the title in 1967, 1985, 1986, 1999 & 2011) they played in the Conference (step one) from 1986 to 1991 and in 1999/2000; following the non-league restructure of 2004 they spent four seasons in Conference South (step two) before dropping back to the Isthmian Premier for three seasons returning to step two in 2008; last season they won the National League Southern Division to gain promotion to National League Premier (step one) where they play this season. Their best FA Cup performance have seen them play in the fourth round proper on two occasions (1970 against Leeds United and 1989 against Norwich City). In the FA Trophy they were finalists in 1981 and had additional semi-final appearances in 1993 and 2000; they also played in the final of the FA Amateur Cup in 1963 and 1969 plus the semi-finals of 1937 and 1968.
Our mutual league history is brief covering just four seasons all in the Isthmian League Premier Division when it was still a step two division; three of those ran from 1983 to 1986 including Worthing' best league finishes as runners-up in both 1984 (Sutton finished 4th) and 1985 (Sutton won the title by four points), in 1986 Sutton won the title again with Worthing finishing 14th; the other season was in 1995-96 when we finished bottom of the table. Over those four seasons Worthing gained two wins (both at Woodside Road), Sutton United had three wins (one at Woodside Road) and there were three draws. Sutton United beat Worthing 5-1 in the first round of the Isthmian League Full Members Cup in November 1993.
The last time the teams played each other in a competitive fixture was on Saturday 23rd March 1996 with Worthing visiting Sutton United and the home team winning 3-1; the last game at Woodside Road was on Saturday 7th October 1995 when Worthing won 5-2. This will be the first time that the two clubs will have faced each other in any of the national FA cup competitions.
Since the start of December Sutton United have lost two of their eight games while winning four (including over League Two Cheltenham Town in the FA Cup) and drawing two (one of which resulted in their exit from the Surrey Senior Cup on penalties against Raynes Park Vale). On Saturday (7th) they drew 0-0 with League One AFC Wimbledon in the FA Cup and then lost (0-1) at Braintree Town in the league on Tuesday (10th). Sutton United currently sit in fourteenth place in the National League Premier Division with thirty-five points from twenty-seven games, while having an excellent home record (winning nine of fourteen) they have only one win from thirteen away league games this season (losing nine).
Worthing are unbeaten in thirteen games (winning ten) across all competitions and eight games (winning six) in the league; most recently beating Canvey Island (5-0) on Tuesday (10th).
To reach this stage of the FA Trophy Worthing have progressed past Kempston Rovers, Cray Wanderers, step two Hemel Hempstead Town and step one Dagenham & Redbridge while Sutton United defeated Bath City (1-0) in the first round.
If a replay is required (neither club appear to have informed fans whether they have agreed to a replay or to play to a finish in the event of a draw after normal time on Saturday) it cannot take place over the mid-week immediately following Saturday as Sutton United are scheduled to play their FA Cup 3rd Round Replay at AFC Wimbledon on Tuesday 17th January (this also means that our Sussex Senior Cup tie on this date at Eastbourne Borough should remain in the schedule), therefore the most likely replay date would be Tuesday 24th January, in which case our home fourth round League Cup tie against Billericay Town would need to be postponed and re-arranged.
The winner of this tie will win £6000 in prize money and progression to the 'Round of the last 16 teams' (third round proper) which is due to be played on the weekend of Saturday 4th February; if Worthing progress this will mean that our home league game with Needham Market currently scheduled for the same date will need to be postponed and re-arranged.
This is the sixth time that Worthing have played in the 'Round of the last 32 teams', the last time losing a home replay with Hednesford Town in 2003-04, we have won just once at this stage of the competition (1-0 at home to Bridgend Town in January 1986) therefore if we progress this season the class of 2016/17 will match our clubs best FA Trophy performance in reaching the 'Round of the last 16 teams' as we did in the 1985/86 season.
While for Worthing this is a huge home game with the chance to take on a second step one club in the space of a few weeks, for Sutton United this game probably pales a little when compared to their current third round appearance in the FA Cup having already drawn with League One AFC Wimbledon and now looking forward to a replay to come on Tuesday (17th) with the added carrot of the chance to host Leeds United in the fourth round live on TV with the associated financial windfalls should they win; whether that future game will have any impact either their team selection or player performance for Saturday is another matter of course.
If any further inspiration were needed we can look towards the west along the coast to last seasons semi-finalists Bognor who played and beat Sutton United (in a home replay) during their FA Trophy run.
As with the visit to Dagenham and Redbridge in the last round having the strong belief that we have shown in recent weeks will increase our chances of taking another significant cup scalp.
Worthing FC Away Boys have arranged a pre-match get together at The Downview (opposite West Worthing station) from Noon (12pm), see the event of Facebook - www.facebook.com/events/1853903448190324/?ref=3&action_history=null.
Tickets from the supporters coach to the game at Harlow Town match on Saturday 28th January will be on sale in the programme hut, full details via rebelrebels.proboards.com/thread/3764/.
Go for it lads, Good Luck Rebels.
