Tomorrow night we head to Fetcham Grove for the Velocity Trophy opener against Leatherhead. Match Centre Link - worthingfc.com/matches/2018-19/699/leatherhead-vs-worthing/We will of course want to keep our great start to the season going, certainly looking to better our league visit there last season when we lost 3-0. We gained a point in the reverse fixture with a 1-1 draw. Form wise we have a clear advantage, only Tonbridge Angels sit above us in that table with Leatherhead having only taken five points from six games... Bostik Premier Form table - www.footballwebpages.co.uk/isthmian-football-league-premier-division/form-guideLeatherhead have added some players to their squad lately so that may boost them and the cup is a different beast to the league, both teams may look to rotate their squads a bit.
Talking of Tonbridge... if we do get the result then the second round draw has already been made which will see us face the winners of their home fixture with Sevenoaks Town, a fixture that doesn't take place until the 9th October. Full Draw - www.isthmian.co.uk/velocity-trophy-second-round-draw-made-52824Before all that tomorrow the Academy boys have a game at Woodside Road at 2pm, kicking of their season against Tooting & Mitcham. Good luck to both teams as we hope for two positive results tomorrow. Come on you Rebels!

Cheers fella, absolutely no intrusion whatsoever, that's a great read. There's no game at Woodside Road in your step three 'back catalogue' I see. You can be assured a warm welcome if you can get yourself down to Sunny Worthing sometime. In general there's a strong feeling we've got something developing here under Hinch and on our synthetic carpet we usually play a very much more composed and attractive game than you saw last night. You will also find much better facilities and quicker service at the food kiosk Your 'misted lens moment' did make me chuckle. It called to mind this little gem... www.youtube.com/watch?v=QeduBcf_hPM To fill in the gap our resident twinkle toes took possession just outside a very crowded box and burst forwards. He somehow danced through about four challenges then smacked a drive through such a mass of bodies that their keeper clearly didn't see it as he barely moved. David Ajiboye can do that, quick feet conjuring something out of nothing. All the best.

Yeah, I would definitely like to get down to Worthing, it'd have to be a Saturday match because of the travel time involved. I thought Ajiboye looked good - from your description of the goal I'm even more disappointed to have missed it now!

Still to play Tonbridge at home on the 20th November in round 2 but the draw has been made for round 3.
We beat Tonbridge and we are at home to either Hastings United or Merstham.

Back from my holiday and straight into action, tonight we welcome Tonbridge Angels to the Woodside in round 2 of the Velocity Trophy. I'll compile a statistical preview in a bit but in the meantime here's a preview courtesy of WFCSA.... Preview and injury situation update from the Official Site - HereTonbridge Angels Match Thread - HereAs can be seen from the top link Hinch is hoping to have as strong a team as possible given the current injury situation. It may 'only be the Velocity', if one takes that view, but the wider significance of this tie can't be ignored. Angles are one of only two teams above us in the league and, just like Enfield last week, we want to put down a marker that we are coming for them. Last season we completed a league double against tonight's opponents. We won at home in December 2-0 with goals from Keiron Pamment and Jimmy Wild. We then won on the road 2-1 in March with goals from Zak and Ben Pope. Form wise, in all competitions (last six), we sit 2nd and they sit a lowly 17th. They have fallen away quite a bit after being the divisional pace setters early on with only one win in the last five league games (and that was struggling Whitehawk). Since then apart from a 1-1 draw with Kingstonian, they have lost without scoring against Harlow and Haringey. But, as ever, when you look at relative home and away form things get a little tighter, we sit fifth for the last six at home, they sit 7th for the last six away. Overall form (6) - HereHome form (6) - HereAway form (6) - HereTonbridge progressed to this stage courtesy of a 3-0 home win against Hythe Town in round 1. The winners of tonight's fixture face a home tie in round three against Hastings United or Merstham - that fixture, in Hastings, is also played tonight. If you are going tonight wrap up very warm, it's gonna be a very cold one. Come on you Rebels!

Rebels win 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw over 90 minutes. A Sam Rents thunderbolt cancelling out Tonbridge's opener.
A bit of controversy in the spot kicks. I didn't have the best of views myself but folk seemed convinced Reece Meekums 'missed' penalty crossed the line, hit the side bracing of the goal then came back out. Oh for a Russian linesman!
It mattered not in the end thankfully.

Have to say from where I was standing, north side looking across to the goal, it did seem to go in. The guy with the best view of it was the lino by the side of the goal. If it did go in, why the hell did he not see it? Otherwise, what is the point of him being there? Will view it when it comes out on you tube highlights and will be happy to take comments back if it did not cross the line. Never mind, we got there in the end. Good game actually.

I wasn't there but the general consensus on the AwayBoys messenger was that it had clearly gone over the line.
It's a very interesting quirk of our goals that the ball can seem to ping back with force out of the goal. I remember a goal down the shed end where this happened and I wondered if the away team would just carry on playing and pretend it hadn't gone in. Fortunately a couple of their player reacted in a way that made it very obvious the ball had gone in.
As has been pointed out however, what is the role of the lino near the goal during pens if not to check the ball going over the line? Luckily it didn't cost us as would've left a sour taste in our mouths.

I may be mistaken Jules but I'm not sure there was actually a camera there last night, certainly wasn't one on the gantry. I'd be surprised given everything seems to get recorded at Woodside Road, maybe it was there but being kept warm and dry elsewhere in the ground.
One side issue to the incident. The lino and their players were getting (not unreasonably in the circumstances) spades abuse surrounding what appeared to be an impending injustice. Pete Stone had made a plea in last nights programme for respect and the good reputation of the club to be upheld after the recent pyro silliness and the Enfield keeper abuse. Having that testing situation arise at the very game the plea was made must've had him in full facepalm mode.

Back to cup action on Tuesday and up for grabs against Merstham is a place in the Velocity Trophy quarter finals. As well as being a good chance to progress towards some silverware, having suffered back to back losses for the first time this season the game has an added significance, we really need to get back that winning habit. Match Centre Link - HereWere we to look at this as a league fixture our form would suggest we should be favourites, we are third on the last six overall games they are seventeenth. Bostik Premier overall form (6) - HereToggle through though the respective home and away form however and whilst Merstham are still down there for away form over the last six, we now only sit 13th for home form over the last six. Add in the injury situation and nothing can be taken for granted here, in a mini slump and shorter than we'd like to be on options the boys are going to have to dig deep to progress. The draw for the QF's has already been made, a bit convoluted as one round two and both round three matches are still to be played but it looks like this... Quarter Finals (To be played by 18th January)
Worthing/Merstham v Bowers & Pitsea/Wingate & Finchley/Bishop’s Stortford Enfield Town v Burgess Hill Town AFC Hornchurch v Whitstable Town Bracknell Town/Felixstowe & Walton v Folkestone Invicta Come on you Rebels!
