Lots of fine surface water. A goalkeeper with the same vertical challenges Harrison had. Cup nerves. Why the hell aren't we taking a shot or two from distance? Or indeed anywhere?
The banging it over into the corner play also just doesn't work, especially when it's skiddy, or we're operating with lightweight wingers.
I can't remember a shot in the second half besides a Luer header. So much creativity, so little in the way of decisiveness...
All in all, a little frustrated with how that turned out. We weren't appalling, but if you don't buy a ticket and kick the ball towards the other team's goal, you don't get into round 2 of the FA Cup.
Shout out to Nicky Wheeler and Odei who didn't stop. Massive shout out to the Away Boys who didn't stop singing.

I listens Petes commentary and congratulations to AT who done the number on us defensively and hit us with two goals one a screamer and the second fŕom what i gather some poor defending. Yet again it sounded it was a toothless display from us away from home no urgency hsrdly created everything. This inconsistency is wearing tbh we need to sort this out. I'm bitterly disappointed as this wasta tie we had a real chance to progress into the second round. Feel for our fans who now have that 300 mile journey home. Well done all who made the trek, safe travels! Can't speak to the commentary but agree we lacked a bite/creativity/risk in the final third. Outside of that Klass upped his physicality against 3 'Joe Taylors', Felix bit the ankles of anyone near him and we played good football up to their box. They had plenty of yellows and we kept playing our game. I wouldn't want to watch them every week and were it not for their wonderstrike, we'd be celebrating a well deserved return to Woodside. After my emotional over reaction from the Yeovil game, I'm going to take the long coach journey back as a price to pay for a day out in the FA cup! Up the Rebels!

Full credit to Alfreton, friendly stewards and staff, smoking allowed and a defence that didn't allow us even a sniff of goal. They had a few chances and their first was a worldy.
Great Rebels turn out with any faces from the past seen (and hugged)

Been home for 20 minutes and had the way home to reflect. Here are my thoughts for what they are worth. For starters they stadium is old but very functional. Staff and locals very friendly. And then for main course. We had lots of the ball in the first half but didn’t create anything. We were lucky not to concede a penalty. Felix handled the ball with his hand on the floor. I think everyone saw it apart from the person who made the decisions. Talking about him though he and his assistants didn’t have the greatest game. But to be fair it was for both parties. I was thinking we turned the tide against Bath away but does it turn out to be a fluke? At the moment it seems so. Back to the game. They played a very simple game. All balls though the air to the no9 who will win the headers and we will take it from there. No variation what so ever. Their first goal was well taken. Nothing Rees could do about it.
Thought we could have made some changes sooner. But like someone said before you have to take a shot to have a change of winning.
To finish I can see why they don’t attract a big crowd when they play at home. Todays attendance was 1023 which I think is poor for a 1st round of the FA cup proper. Their style of football is not my cup of tea. However it was working today as they won the game. A lot has been said about the financial side of this game, 41k to the winner. And on paper this was a winnable game. Am I disappointed with today’s result yes I am! Yes extremely disappointed. It is a very long way to come and don’t see us have many efforts on goal. But let’s focus on the league now and have a good result on Tuesday at home

Regardless of today's result, I did a bit of research on Alfreton while I was waiting for Pete's commentary to begin.
Their crowds are generally a fair bit lower than ours, but then the town's population is about 25,000. It has ONE secondary school.
And yet their football team has been ensconced in the NLN or equivalent for the past eight years or so, and prior to that they had a few seasons at Step One.
Now it may well be that the economics are quite different between the NLN and NLS (their £41k winnings today will obviously help them out), but it made me think that Worthing should be able to exceed their status, no offence intended to them.
If they can get to Step 1, and survive a few seasons, then absolutely we should be able to do similarly, and given our likely greater potential, establish ourselves as a team at that level in the near future.

Firstly can I say what a fantastic following you had, for such a long journey, You all did your club proud on a very miserable day. We are a small mining town, and most of our fans think we are still punching above our level, but like you,we have a fantastic chairman/owner, who gives his heart and sole to our club. You have a godsend in him. Cherish George, like we do Wayne. I've been a critic of our manager at times, but I thought he got his tactics absolutely spot on today. We held a very high line in defence and negated most of your forward threat. I must say that every now and then you need to put the ball into the box, it's the only way you'll score. Too many times you were in a good position to deliver a ball into the box, but decided to play the ball back. I'm not sure why. You play some lovely football, but there needs to be a purpose. I think the difference between the National North and the South is that the North is far more physical. It's a very very tough league we are in. It took a worldy to take the lead in a close contest. The second, I would question the defence, although it was a good finish. That's being picky as a former defender (in poor local football or more likely a poor defender in local football). Many thanks to those who visited today. I hope you had a good day and all had a safe journey home. Best of luck for the rest of the season. Take care Jeff

A missed opportunity really, sadly attacking wise we didn't turn up. 90 minutes and we didn't manage one shot on target
Alfreton were a big, organised side who had some attacking threat via the big 9 and the 7 whilst we had none whatsoever.
They sat off us, let us have possession until we ultimately lost patience and tried to force the issue and aimed long diagonal balls to the wings that ended up out of play.
Our technical way of playing required our clever, technical players to get between their defence and midfield so I didn't quite understand why Ollie and Danny started on the bench.
Fair play to the home side. Despite the awful weather they managed to protect the pitch to get the game on. The staff and locals all seemed very friendly before and after the game.
And in a very tight game they managed to get the ball in the net. The first goal was always going to be important and what a cracking goal it was, a fine strike from way outside the box that found the top corner.

As some of us have been saying for quite some time, we have seven or eight versions of the same player, which makes a large squad somewhat limited.

No shortage of effort and I actually thought we defended quite well against the expected barrage of long balls / throw ins and considering the lack of height we had. We sadly lack a plan B and, as is more and more the case, opposing managers do their homework on us and nullify our slick passing in our own half by allowing us to do exactly that ! Build up play was again too slow and we regularly allow the opposition to take the game to us. We’re crying out for a decent old fashioned big, aggressive target man to get on the end or at least attack the often quality deliveries put in by Wheeler in particular , and Vincent when he plays. I’m not saying resort to the lump it football that Alfreton successfully employed but some aerial threat in the box would be a handy alternative. The options we have up front at the moment are powder puff and provide little or no threat when the ball is played in the box.

Today's misquote is from Jim Bowen....here's what we could have won - Walsall at home.
A few of us know a former Worthing secretary who would have enjoyed that one.

Today's misquote is from Jim Bowen....here's what we could have won - Walsall at home. A few of us know a former Worthing secretary who would have enjoyed that one. I wondered if we would have been ball #2, as that seems daft given our alphabetics. Then I saw Barnet were #1 and it was clearly sod all to do with alphabetical order. So I researched, and discovered that the number relates to when the team came out of the hat (plastic drum) in the previous round. Which was news to me - we might have been knocked out, but I can take small consolation from learning something new at the age of 51

Y'know what I'd quite fancy Alfreton in that one. Strong, direct, physical, home advantage, going well in their league, one game before round 3.
