I did not go last night so cannot comment, but I have nothing but praise for the players that finished the season, but fankly we were not good enough for promotion as there is something very wrong on the coaching front.
I believe our downfall, like the previous two seasons is due to having too many loan players. Hughes was fine as we were allowed to keep him to the end of the season but the others were a liability.
We could have done with Douglas and Skinner but they were not allowed to play and as for Garghan and Cobbs, they were very talented players but were both recalled leaving us with a hole at Left back and forward which was then too late to fill and these remained problem positions for the whole season.
Would have been better to have signed permanent players in the close season when there were plenty available. The dismal period co-incided with the recall of the Brighton players.
The only teams to benefit from loans are the senior club who can have their fringe players getting match practice and being available as and when needed. For a club like ours the only excuse for a loan player is to replace an injured player pro tem or to loan out a fringe player such as Brotherton to Whyteleafe and recall him when WE NEED him, not the other way round.
Not knowing if a player is available until the last minute is a recipe for disaster. This is not just my opinion but that of some of the most successful managers and coaches in the non-league game.
I just hope we can keep our better players for next season and back them up with one or two experienced , permanently signed, players
Good luck to all.
