Ok, you asked for it
There are suggestions that it would be a good idea (and rumoured that it may be considered) to take all six Step Four divisions to 22 teams for next season.
Currently the two Northern Premier Division One's (NL1N & NL1S) have 18 teams each and Southern League Division One Midlands has 21 clubs; so an increase in the population at step Four of nine teams would be needed for next season (from 123 clubs) to (6x22) 132 clubs.
Starting with the 123 (3x22, 2x18 & 1x21) teams currently. The current line is:
- At present twelve teams are due for promotion to Step Three while only eleven are due to come down to Step four (as the Northern Premier League Premier Division has only 21 clubs this season) (-1 from Step Four)
- At present nine teams are due to be relegated from Step Four (2 from IL1S, IL1N, SL1SW; 1 from SL1M, NP1N, NP1S) (-9)
- Alsgar Town (NL1S) are to be relegated from Step Four due to failing ground grading (-1)
- Newcastle Blue Star (NL1N) are apparently volunteering for relegation from Step Four (-1)
- At present twelve teams are due for promotion from Step Five (+12)
This makes 123 teams; still nine teams short of six divisions of 22 clubs.
The real guess work starts here.....
To make up the numbers to 132 teams:
- The number of teams promoted from Step Five could be increased by three to 15 (+3)
- With two NP1 teams already down for non-playing reasons, the two bottom placed teams in NP1S & NP1N would receive reprieves (+2)
- The four 21st placed teams in the Southern League (SL1SW & SL1M) and Isthmian League (IL1N & IL1S) Division One's would receive reprieves (which currently includes Horsham YMCA) (+4)
Thus a net increase of nine teams; making the 123+9=132 for Six Divisions of 22 clubs.
Quite a bit of geographical shifting around across divisions at Step Four would be needed to make six even divisions.
Much of the later part of this appears to be suggestion, rumour and guess work, though the man who is generally in the know,
Tony Kempster appears to be going along with this at present.
Yet again this all appears to primarily be down to the FA and the various Leagues not dealing with this properly before the season started, as they should have after the total mayhem of the closed season last summer.
All of the above may change in the coming weeks and in the end will not be totally confirmed until the FA National League Committee and the various league AGM's have occurred over the summer.
Yet again it looks like we are in for another summer of teams going bust or choosing demotions along with others receiving reprieves.
Let the totally preventable lunacy commence.....
