Thoroughly entertaining game and I thought a credit to Worthing and the National League South. I felt we dominated and played some of our best football in the last 5 or 6 games. Build up play was patient and intricate (sometimes too much) and we just lacked that killer final ball / stroke of luck in the penalty area. Thought playing Wills in the centre was a good move and gave us more solidity enabling us to win more second ball. Wheeler is an absolute class act but I personally feel he is wasted in our side. He consistently puts in quality crosses but with no one tall enough or willing enough to put their head in where it hurts and get on the end of them. A Jason Prior or Mo Faal in our team and I reckon we wouldnโt be far off pushing Yeovil for the title. Having said all that we have โdefendersโ who donโt like to defend which always leaves us chasing games and having to score 3 or 4 to win matches. We are blessed with an array of talented midfielders but blatantly need a no nonsense centre back. All in all though today was a great advert for Worthing Football Club ๐

He is rumoured to be on some serious money at Dorking.

Funny how different eyes see different things, glimpses apart I thought our transitions were very turgid. Almost back to the 'slow, slow, quick, (not so) quick, slow' momentum of the days Aarran was playing. No urgency, just knock it about the back and hope for the killer pass... that will never come because the opposition have now got back into shape. Case in point was in injury time. Roco picks up the ball from their attack and to a man the whole back line and and a couple of mids barely started walking up the pitch. You have moments left to win the game...RUN!! A win would've papered over some gaping cracks though. We've got even worse at the back, no presence, no tightness on players in the box, and that lack of urgency means we're creating less up top. Thank god for Danny Cashman today. A calm 'passed in' first and total 'thunderbastard' of a second ๐๐ป MOTM for me though, again, was Joe Felix. The only players with some urgency, some drive, some desire to be direct. Nicky Wheeler would've got an honourable mention but no-one seemed to want to pass it to him for long spells. Should be happy with a point but I'm not, we have become soft. Too easy to pick off. The sooner we get a new manager and some new impetus the better, too late for this season but we need to rebuild for next season... how we are finishing 23/24 singnals very bad Juju for 24/25. ...and with that uncertainty over who will be the manager next season still ongoing and a transfer window on Thursday, how many players today might've just played their last games in a Worthing shirt? ๐ณ Good point about the defensive frailties, it's been a little bit perplexing that since Arran got injured we've been short at the back yet have bought in more and more attacking options.

So however we much we love our back four, they are demonstrably not good enough.

I couldn't go today, caught most of it on the telly, Aarran said it himself in his interview at the end, if there are 6 ft plus centre halves out there who can slabhead the ball away at set pieces AND play out from the back etc, they are almost certainly already playing at a higher level.

really enjoyed this Sunday day out watching football , fantastic atmosphere on a chilly but sunny day . The game was also really entertaining watched by a fantastic crowd . In iin fact would be more than happy watching more sunday football at this level . Kane was my man of the match as he distributed the ball really well demanding it all the time finding space all the time , he is so calm & seems to have plenty of time with the ball , then finding his man .
Well done to everyone involved setting up this great advert for our league .

I'm afraid I'm in the camp of Keithsson's summing up, word for word. Only thing to add is that Ollie was unusually largely ineffective.

I thought it was just me! Done my head in that despite the obvious defensive frailties all season, and getting worse, we have done nothing about it, but signed more attacking midfielders. Iโd love to know the thinking thatโs gone on, or rather not gone on.

Good point about the defensive frailties, it's been a little bit perplexing that since Arran got injured we've been short at the back yet have bought in more and more attacking options. All fir coat and no knickers you mean, absolutely ๐๐ป Bear with... Since Hinsh distilled his blend and settled on this identity its always been that way to a certain extent. We've never been ROCK solid, we've always had frailties. Its part of the system really... take risks, invite opponents on, create space to play through, exploit the space = tea and medals ๐ In his final months though he just went next level fir coat and no knickers... to mask the absence of any skedders he just bought yet more fir, yet more bling, but no knickers. But when, as is happening again now, you slow the tempo of our play down, you resist being brave and attacking quickly, those spaces close up, the lines just can't be played through. Not surprisingly when trying to play through a brick wall, we lose possession more often, we face more attacks ourselves. And its then that the protection of our fir coat is lost and our bare backside is exposed to the elements for all to spank. And it was men against boys in the air in our box today, giants v munchkins. Shambolic stuff at times, unable to clear our lines or win headers. But being slow in transition you are left with no option but to throw crosses over into their box too... well munchkins don't become giants just because their up the other end of the pitch. So, we lose possession again and our backside is out in the wind again... and repeat, and repeat. Our shtick has always been that however bad our goals conceeded has been, our goals scored has outperformed it. It means on balance we come out of it smelling of roses. Since Hinsh left though we simply haven't done this... P5, W1, D1, L3. And that's all down to... GF7, GA11, GD-4. It all comes from good intentions and it may only be a small incremental shift, but I believe that in trying to shore up the defence by being more cautious, more considered in our play... we've actually killed the goose that laid the golden eggs. Its 'cause & effect' on a pro-rata basis, say 1:2. By just 10% more caution, 10% less pace in transition... we reduce the impact of our attacks by 20%. By such small margins Hinsh's system sinks or swims... and our form doesn't lie, we are drowning ๐ For now, if we're sticking with Hinsh's system, we have to go balls deep... be brave, be bold, be quick. You slow up one cog, even just slightly, and the whole machine doesn't work. When the new broom comes though, when fresh eyes finally look at our club for the first time in years. The first thing our new gaffer will do is to sort us out some whopping great thermal 'big girl pants' ๐๐ป

Sorry, that's been a good couple of weeks in the making that outburst, its off my chest now and it feels marvellous ๐
Onto more positive things... away from the football ๐
I really wasn't sure how the crowd would go so was pleasantly surprised by the numbers. Bath brought more than I thought would bother for a TV game on a Sunday, and from chatting to a few strange faces it seems a lot of neutrals were in attendance (they loved the shall we say 'open' nature of the game).
The new stand looked/sounded good from a distance, especially when full. Second half called to mind more of a queue waiting down the side of an out of town cash & carry ๐ค
I've seen images of the rake and quite thin steps. I'd be interested to hear the thoughts of those who used it. Was it OK?
Unless I missed something no village idiots crawled out of the woodwork to spoil our day, so that was good.
I'm going to zip through the recording now, to see how we came over (avoiding the 90 minutes of football of course).

Ground looked good. Most irritating thing was the commentator referring to Kane as 'Willis' throughout.

I actually agree with a lot of the posts today. With Adam, it was a case of we will nearly always outscore whoever we are playing against. As everyone knows, we have been defensively frail for a long time but our attacking and scoring ability has always masked this. The slight changes made recently and understandly to try and make us more solid at the back have clearly not worked and have nullified our attacking threat. We all know that the team needs to better defensively but I still believe that there is an answer to our defensive problems without chucking on the bonfire our footballing identity. Neither goals today came from our style of playing from the back and possession based football. Getting the next managerial appointment right is absolutely essential as any huge shift in style will not only mean different playing personnel but a complete overhaul of our pathway system. I don't really see any outstanding local managers capable of achieving this transition apart from maybe Jamie Howell, but I suspect it will be some left field appointment that we weren't expecting. This is a great club and an enviable position for the right person.

I must say it is extremely frustrating to keep seeing Worthing playing it short at basically every deadball. Bath City got their two goals from just whipping in their corners and causing some chaos in the Worthing box. I know the management team want to play a certain style of football, but that seems to be the only style of play Worthing have. There's no Plan B at all. Teams playing us mostly have this sussed and know a high press and marking Ollie Pearce out of the game is the way to stop Worthing. Yet, the management team seems to just keep thinking "Stay calm and keep playing our game and the chances will come", but what happens when they don't? I counted three corners that Worthing took today that went short, didn't get crossed into the box and eventually ended up being passed back to Rees. It's too predictable and most teams can see this coming a mile off. There's also an alarming lack of urgency at times and Worthings "keep calm" approach plays right into the oppositions hands. It all just seems that are Worthing repeatedly shooting themselves in the foot and without the super goals from Cashman today it would have all ended up in another uninspiring defeat. The team needs to be more flexible in their approach, understand when it's time to try a different style, play with more urgency (especially when losing and it's late in the game), have better all-round game management, adjust to the team in front of them. Especially especially especially when it comes to short freekicks/corners/goal kicks, these should obviously be an advantage to any team. Yet to Worthing, it's another chance to play themselves into trouble. It's these little tweaks that are making it so so frustrating to watch them on this run. It can be worked on and change the outcome of games in our favour, but alas I expect we'll see more of the same until the end of the season and a management setup scratching their head at how on earth the team has failed to make the playoffs.

Needless to say I fully agree hmenty. But on the subject of corners specifically, although I had hoped something would change post Hinsh, I do understand why it hasn't. One of the most startling deficiencies of Hinsh was his idealogical point blank refusal to throw a corner into the mixer. It was a 'spit yer coffee out' moment when he said he wished corners could be taken away in a podcast. The irony wasn't lost on me when I saw a couple of his first York goals were from direct corners ๐ค But we are left with that legacy. Not only do we lack the height required to take advantage (in either box) but they won't have trained a corner routine beyond short corners in years. Its too late now to try and coach them. Its just one of a growing number of examples of why a fresh pair of eyes needs to be cast over how we do things. The absence of a plan B, the absence of height, the absence of long corner and free kick options. These are not new observations. I agree with whoever said it earlier about not necessarily reinventing the wheel... but give the wheel some grip, some knobbly tyres for when the terrain isn't so smooth.

At this stage of the season, there is absolutely no point in obsessing over our deficiencies. Now is the time to focus on our strengths.
