Really enjoyed yesterday for obvious reasons. But one thing I noticed even though there was a record attendance the atmosphere felt a bit flat. Usually we stand behind the goal so you don’t notice it much. But for the second half we stood near the tunnel. Only reason was that Ollie Wright promised my son a pair of goalie gloves. Which he delivered on. Son one happy boy (he is massive saints fan) But back to the atmosphere. Second half I noticed almost a “quietness” around the ground. And it really surprised me with the amount of people in it was quiet. Was that because usually we stand in the middle of things? Or is it always like that? Or where there some many new people attending? In the end we got the win, one goal separating us from second so a good finish to the regular season I put it down to nerves. Yes we're exciting to watch, yes it's sexy stuff going forwards. But the ying to that yang, especially having already shot ourselves in both feet (as per usual) is no scoreline is ever secure for us. Any given day an opposition can score multiple times against us, its happened so often we kind of expect it. The upshot was of course that the flatness was firmly embedded by the time the crowd had a real job to do. In any other ground in such circumstances when Chippenham equalised and the home team needed just one more goal there'd be a buzz, a groundswell of noise that bubbles up, transmits to the players and the whole thing goes up a notch. Never happened because like you say, we were flat.

Atmosphere quiet/tense maybe because we so needed that 5th goal yet we still seemed to be playing around at the back with no real penetration. When we did get more adventurous, the chances so nearly came. Maybe the crowd just needed something to cheer ...... the numbers there made rousing sounds when there was something to cheer, but then back it went to playing in our own half. Yes, we didn't lose the ball, but no, we didn't get the goal.

As my username suggests, I’m fairly new to supporting Worthing but have watched approx 25 games over last 3 seasons, but would observe that the crowd is much more passive than what I’m accustomed to, having watched mostly League One football for over 50 years. I don’t think it’s just the much lower crowds, maybe the average supporter is less committed to wanting the team to succeed, than in EFL. This isn’t a criticism, just an observation which you may well disagree with.
Also, when half the blokes on the terraces are holding a drink, it doesn’t lend itself to clapping a good move, or to physically exhorting the players. You can’t take a drink pitchside in the EFL.

The away boys behind the goal do a great job singing but it’d be great to have the whole ground joining in next week.

Trouble is 90% of posters on here who love the club still don’t sing and shout and get behind the team, no offence intended to anyone as any support at our level is more than welcomed, but would be great if the whole ground can get behind the side next week

Or in the National League if we go up! If so maybe these free hands will clap more. Sadly I suspect however they might not be here. For the 'social' fans, by those I mean the South East corner gathering, it seems the drinking is to a greater or lesser degree what they are there for. Not putting it down, its all funds for the club but will these guys spend the £20 (or more) to stay 'dry' and watch the game? Your broader point is valid though. To a lot of our number, especially those gained over the last few years, Worthing FC is their 2nd club. They are 'less committed', not because they're passionless fans, just because their big passions lie elsewhere. Cest la vie though. As with the 'social' fans its all money into the Rebels coffers, and over time we can 'turn' them 😉 Promotion brings a genuine risk to the crowd dynamic. The drinking culture will have to stop, or at least be modified, and will the casual '2nd teamers' be quite so willing to turn up when we're getting humped every week? We'll always have our hard-core, and that has grown too of course. But whilst we've been entertaining, even swashbuckling fare in recent years, and have grown an interested casual following on the back of it, that could be about to end. Interesting times ahead... and not just on the pitch.

The away boys behind the goal do a great job singing but it’d be great to have the whole ground joining in next week. Wouldn't that be nice. However the extra numbers we'll have will all be the aforementioned 'socials' and 'second teamers', unlikely to add much to the atmosphere beyond numbers sadly.

I don't understand why folk go to the game, and then seem to prefer to show more interest in getting the beers in than watching the football - you've paid £16 quid to get in, you can go and get hammered in a pub without paying to get in! I'll usually have a pint or two, depending on the queues, at matches, but it's not a dealbreaker.

I just come to the conclusion we are a nation of p*** heads!
