I don't entirely get or even agree with the "We must get players in" sentiment.
We're not going to overtake Yeovil whoever we recruit, we can't afford to break the budget (that way lies madness) and getting to the play off lottery is eminently possible with our current squad and then we are in the lap of the gods.
Stick or twist?? I say stick

The goalkeeper may play a system like ours at Southampton but our players thought systems may be completely different as to which players can handle tight situations and you wouldn’t know that on your first game. This game as important as it was needed familiarity through the team and I’m afraid Adam got what should have been a standard decision wrong by not selecting Rocco.

Why is that then, did Josh Jeffries cost us the game

I don’t think it follows that if we stop the risk taking across the defence, we’ll no longer be the same attacking force. I don’t see the logic in that.
My son tells me that Pep Guardiola is happy to concede the occasion goal due to losing the ball to the opposition’s press, because he reckons that overall it leads to more chances and goals at the other end. However, we’re not Man City.
It would be interesting to know what percentage of goals conceded are due to errors from playing it across the back four and goalie.

I think the management are perfectly aware of the need for cover in the central defensive area - they brought Chima in, but it didn't work out for whatever reason - he lives too far away/he wasn't good enough/he wasn't a great fit (delete as appropriate). The experienced 6'3" slabhead who will command the back line, head everything away, whilst also being able to comfortably play out from the back and hit 50 yard diagonals just MIGHT be kind of difficult to locate.

We aren't Man City, of course, but by the same token, the teams we're playing aren't Liverpool or Arsenal or Real Madrid either. If, by playing out from the back, you can suck three of their players in, and play through them, using the keeper usually, then overloads are created higher up the pitch as several of the opposition are now the wrong side of the ball. I see kids' teams trying to do it most weekends, when it works it's wonderful to watch, when it goes wrong it can be quite comical. But it's good to see them try, rather than them just aimlessly punt the ball upfield. We could have an old-school manager, we could play rudimentary long-ball football, it could possibly be more successful (though I doubt it). I'm glad we don't, personally, and accept the risk/reward nature of Hinsh's style of play.

Why is that then, did Josh Jeffries cost us the game No, but neither has Rocco in the last few games. We need to encourage our own when they’ve done well, getting a back up keeper is fine but only play him if our own is struggling with injury or form.

But Eastbourne are not Chelmsford. If we had won on Saturday everyone would say what a great choice it was to play a different goalie. Having seen the highlights and especially the second goal. Yes the keeper maybe could/should have done better. But why was their player completely unmarked? In the end of the day there is only one person that selects the team. We might agree or disagree with some choices. And despite Adam giving interviews and updates we will never know the complete picture of they how and why.

We need to encourage our own when they’ve done well, getting a back up keeper is fine but only play him if our own is struggling with injury or form. With respect, there is a lot of recency bias at play here. Successive clean sheets against a side that barely tested him is not a season-wide and objective view of the situation. And getting a GK of calibre in isn't a wand-waving exercise as it takes time, not just to identify a suitable target and get them here but also managing the situation with Rocco respectfully and in this case, I think Adam has played a blinder in terms of man management. We desperately need to strengthen but sadly the sort of players that we need are first choices at their current clubs (who are probably doing well), possibly under contract and will have no interest in moving to a geographically difficult location mid-season. Which leaves us with loans from professional clubs or out of contract players all of whom are very hit and miss. We played well on Saturday but Jake gifted them the first, the GK could have done better with the second and we completely switched off for the third after they hit the bar. Strangely, the subs disrupted our flow even though there wasn't probably anyone in the ground who disagreed with who came on and who went off. Ollie Pearce continued to prove why he's the best in the division. Finn Chadwick played really well in the middle (and needed to with Klass not available for selection at the worst possible time) and I thought Joe Rye was immense. The budget comments from Adam were interesting. Initially you think that there must be £££ to spare with Rea, Aguiar, Smith and Tutt off the wage bill. But it's also fair to think that perhaps the board backed Adam with extra funds for Cashman and Rea - both of whom joined after the squad was finalised and the recent departures have merely balanced the books again. I have no idea whether this is true or not but it would make sense. If we can eventually get a central defender, a left back and a midfielder in, even if it means we lose a couple more in positions where we already have good options then we will be in really good shape. We knew the squad was unbalanced at the start of the season and that losing Harrison Male was a HUGE loss. Losing Aarran on top has been catastrophic. Trust the style, the system and the architect of this blueprint that has served us so well over the years. And be careful what you wish for.

Excellent post Ian. My sentiments exactly. We are still very much in the mix, play delightful football, have a first class manager and have great crowds. What's not to like?

Sorry, completely disagree that we "desperately need to strengthen". Our two centre backs are two of the best defenders in the division and if we wanted to play a left back at left back we would play one. We have Reuben and Kyle ready and waiting for the opportunity. I read recently that our back up players weren't "pulling up trees" at Step 4 so it is nice to see that Chopper "played really well in the middle". Brad and Starkey are scoring goals for Littlehampton and we have others too just waiting for the opportunity. A really healthy position to be in.

When you say 2 Centre backs are you talking about Rye and Racine? as Colbran is a RB and i feel we miss him at right back and his creativity from RB Agree with Ian regarding a CB and LB needed. We have the joint 8th Worst defense in the league on paper, and its not surprising when half of our defenders are playing out of their normal positions. So if we have the 2 of the best defenders in the div i think this is viewing this few very red tinted glasses, im not saying any are bad players i rate all highly but not best in the div by any means.

Colbran is a very good defender who has played full back and centre back in the past and is currently playing at centre back. I think you mean only 7 teams have conceded more goals. How many have scored more? The two aren't mutually inclusive. Tottenham don't seem to be doing too badly at the moment despite playing four full backs and conceding quite a few goals! Modern football init!

Modern football init! You say 'Modern Football' but if the goal is to go up then sorting the defense out is key. Since records on FWP go back to 2012 so the past 12 seasons the worst Defense to gain promotion was Oxford last year who had the 8th BEST record in the league Apart from that every side bar Braintree who had the 7th Best record have been in the top 5 best teams in regards to goals conceded on paper. Whilst these are of course facts and figures we currently sit 16th on goals conceded so would break all sorts of records if we were to go up with the current deference record we hold, of course this can happen and stranger thing in football have happened, but anyone who can sit there and say its fine we concede loads of goals but its ok because we score loads is surely missing sight of the bigger picture, if we sort out are defensive frailties there is no doubt we can go on a run and finish 2nd with ease with the fire power we have. As for Colbran, hes a good CB but think back to last season/ and before how creative he was at RB how many assists from crosses he got and how good he is going forward, playing at CB limits that.
