Absolute madness releasing Axell. Whats going on? the bench often has 4 lads under 18. He rarely gave the ball away and his ball distribution was solid. The perfect player surely for our usual tactics of leading then sitting back until we're in the carpark with 16 year old centre halfs. Can't think of one reason why this makes any sense. The Worthing Messi, gone but not forgotten. Metcalf now Axell, the wool is slowly being pulled and very few seem to question anything.

It doesn't make any sense. Maybe be man management is easier if you dont have experience of it when it's youth management !! Ross Edwards looks promising in centre mid but we need experience. We're lucky we've got Omar scaring the s**t out of sides at the other end of the pitch. It doesn't hide our sometimes defensive frailties but let's us get away with them.
Good luck Ax !!!

My take on it is that the club seems to be more about player development and cutting its cloth accordingly, than trying to win league titles and cups at any cost. At our level, that seems to be a very sensible approach. The development centre that has been set up is providing a supply of talented youth players, which is becoming and attractive proposition for young players as some are breaking into the first team squad already. This should help attract the best young players in the area, which can potentially lead on to these young players earning professional contracts in the future with the club hopefully getting a reasonable sum of money in transfer fees. Its early days on that front but there seems to be a fair bit of interest in our young players from professional clubs already.
I think letting Matt Axell leave is a strange one as the squad is so thin in numbers and he does a good job for the team, but he does not fit the model described above, so that maybe where the answer lies.
I think the new owners are beginning to find out that it takes a great deal of money to compete at this level and I wouldn't be surprised if the original target of attaining Conference South football has been reviewed and deemed to be a bit of a pipe dream. Despite an average attendance of c500, we still don't seem to be able to build a full squad with enough experience to become a force at this level, so it seems the Isthmian League is where we will belong for the foreseeable future. At least with youth, they try to play the game in the right way which is generally a pleasure to watch - I would rather watch what we have than a team full of experienced hoofers.
Regarding Omar, whether he stays or goes may not be down to us doing well to keep him, it will likely come down to the details of his playing contract. If it expires in June, he will probably stay and leave on a free in the summer, if it does not expire in June, another club may well then be prepared to stump up a transfer fee.

Not all experienced players are hoofers. A slight generalisation on your part I believe. Regarding Omar the lad is streets ahead of a lot of players in this league. The way he gets around the pitch is truly breathtaking to watch. If he did go I'd wish him all the luck in the world, he's knocked his pipe out for us.

It was indeed a general comment about the more experienced players, hence why it was made in so few words, but I am sure you know what I was getting at.

Let's not waste time worrying when Omar is going or where he is going. Let's make the most of every minute he has a red shirt on his back and enjoy everything this fantastic team is doing. We are truly living in a golden age !!!!

It appears (via his own twitter account, see below) that Arron Hopkinson is leaving Merstham; where he will be moving to after he completes his loan at Woodside Road is not clear at present.

I'm struggling with this one mate...nothing against Matt at all, he conducted himself brilliantly and did very well for us, gave it his all and was everything fans want in a player. As Vertigate said, we are going with youth, which is the way to go. With Ross Edwards coming through, Brannon and Kane are both playing superbly too, having 4 centre mids is a bit of a luxury, given our tiny budget. The dig at our tactics seems a bit harsh, given the two games previous to the post, we'd put 5 past Staines and murdered Dagenham at their place. I'm sure Omar is being looked at by clubs a good few divisions above. This is, as Vertigate said, a good thing in how it shows the pathway to pro football. Omar's next club will be a professional one and he deserves it. Him and Ben Carrington are the best players I've ever seen for Worthing. As Soul Rebel said, golden times indeed. I genuinely can't see any problems. We've a great team, great spirit, we've scored 9 in our last 2 league games, had good runs in all cups we've entere so far, I can't see us finishing anywhere too near the bottom 4 this season, our youth team are brilliant as ever and producing players left, right and centre. The budget is tiny but if we keep Aaron, it lets Dawesey play at 9 which I feel is his best position, as he's simply lethal for us. I genuinely see the grass as green as it's ever been, and it's only going to get better.

Wasn't Metcalf on a decent wedge too before he left.

The club is holding a fans forum on 4th Jan (see Twitter account). Perhaps there will be some answers there re size of budget etc. Personally I would like to see Arron stay, he looks useful so far and fits style of play.
