After what has hopefully been a valuable week without a first team game Worthing return to action as we welcome FA Trophy quarter-finalists and play-off chasing Dulwich Hamlet to Woodside Road on Saturday (4th) at 3pm.
Worthing were beaten (1-4) at Champion Hill in our reverse league fixture in mid-November (rebelrebels.proboards.com/thread/3727/). Dulwich Hamlet won (4-1) on their last league visit to Woodside Road in late December 2012 while our last league win over our visitors came at Woodside Road during the previous season in November 2011 (1-0).
Dulwich Hamlet have two more points than Worthing having played three games less and sit two places above us in the table; they still have a decent shout of challenging for a play-off spot due to the games that they have in hand over most of the current challengers.
Dulwich Hamlet are this season' standout step three club in the FA Trophy having reached the last eight in a run that includes defeats of step two Whitehawk (4-1 away) and step one Braintree Town (0-0 away, 5-2 in a home replay) before coming back from two goals down to draw (2-2) with step one Macclesfield Town at Champion Hill on Saturday (25th); the replay was schedule for Tuesday (28th) but was postponed due to snow; they are now due to visit Cheshire for the replay on this coming Tuesday (7th) and if they win will move on to play Tranmere Rovers over two legs in the semi-final.
In the league our visitors on Saturday have lost just once (0-1 at Canvey Island) in their last eight games (and just twice in their last twenty-six games across all competitions) picking up nine points from their last six; their last three league games have been against promotion challengers which has seen them draw at both Leiston (2-2) and Bognor (1-1) followed by a home win over Needham Market (2-0) on February 18th. Since then they have beaten Barkingside (7-1) in the London Senior Cup prior to their FA Trophy game against Macclesfield Town.
Following on from our two wins over Needham Market and Folkestone we have since had a run of four defeats in a row culminating with the four goal reverse at Staines Town on Saturday 25th.
While for Worthing this game is an opportunity to put an end to our recent poor run for Dulwich Hamlet it is very important in terms of keeping their play-off ambitions in the realm of a realistic challenge especially when considering that they already have two games a week scheduled for the remainder of the season and have one week already containing three matches, a situation that will get even more congested if their cup runs progress further or the weather intervenes again.
For anyone planning on traveling by train be aware that rail engineering work means that no trains are running between Brighton and Littlehampton with a replacement bus service being supplied instead.
The club is holding a free taster session for the Development Programme on Saturday at 11:45am, details can be found on the OS at: worthingfc.com/2017/02/22/development-programme-free-taster-session-saturday-4th-march/.
Good Luck Rebels.
